    Review

From our family's perspective, there is a clear sense that there is both safety and warmth here and, on the other hand, real frustration and painful shortcomings that cannot be ignored. We see the place as a safe and friendly community for our loved ones, and we are grateful for the care our grandmother received in her final months and for the diligent attention to our mother's dementia care during her nine months in the LTC unit. The overall care for our mother has been described as quite excellent, with issues and concerns being addressed promptly. It is comforting to know that, in her daily life, her needs are recognized quickly and handled with care.

Yet this positive impression is tempered by a practical problem that affects every visit: parking. The visitors' lot is frequently occupied by employees, which makes a difficult journey even harder for those who must make the uphill trek to reach their loved ones. Our brother, who has severe lung disease, has to contend with the hill and the crowded lot, and the situation becomes a real obstacle to regular visits. We understand the demands on staff, but the parking issue is personal and tangible for families who are trying to stay close to those inside. Some of us have suggested that younger staff - those in the 20s to 40s - could walk up to support visiting families, thereby freeing up the parking for those who need it most and keeping the path accessible for visitors of all ages.

Separately, another member of our family spent three months there and the experience was, to put it bluntly, horrible. The majority of the staff appeared not to be compassionate, sometimes unfriendly, and seemed uninterested in doing the job they were being paid to do. The call button, which is supposed to be a lifeline in moments of need, felt like a joke. Our dad stopped trying to get help, which is heartbreaking in itself. He was not kept clean, and there were days on end without a proper shower. We escalated to management many times, hoping for change, but nothing improved. The overall impression from this period was of an incredibly bad facility, and it left us shaken and deeply disappointed in how care was delivered during his time there.

In another chapter of our experiences, our grandmother spent the last months of her life battling the final stages of ALS. The care here was a mix of moments of compassion and persistent disorganization. Some staff members showed genuine care, but most were disorganized, uncooperative, and unwilling to work with our family - even as we advocated for her comfort during hospice care. We encountered a troubling attitude from at least one staff member who, while we pleaded for basic pain relief, displayed visible resistance. She was in clear distress and was repeatedly denied the pain medication she had been prescribed. The combination of slow responses, lack of teamwork, and denial of essential pain relief made her final days harder than they needed to be. Based on this experience, we would not recommend care for anyone facing terminal illness.

Taken together, these reviews paint a picture of a facility with variably strong elements and serious, sometimes life-altering, shortcomings. The warmth and safety we felt in the community, especially for my grandmother and my mother, sit side by side with alarming gaps in care, compassion, and responsiveness in other residents' cases. It is difficult to reconcile the presence of genuinely caring staff with the broader patterns of disorganization, neglect, and resistance to family advocacy that we witnessed. The inconsistencies leave families like ours uncertain about what to expect, particularly in moments when our loved ones are most vulnerable.

Ultimately, our collective experience is one of gratitude mingled with caution. We recognize the good that exists - the sense of safety, the prompt attention to issues, and the compassionate moments when care truly shines - but we also carry the sting of episodes that, frankly, should never occur in a facility entrusted with the well-being of patients, especially those in dementia care or terminal illness. We would like to see tangible improvements: a rethinking of visitor parking to ensure easy access for families, stronger emphasis on consistent, compassionate care from all staff, reliable functioning of call systems, regular attention to personal hygiene, and a more collaborative approach to pain relief and hospice needs. Until those changes are evident, we cannot give an unqualified endorsement, and we hope the facility will listen to these experiences as a call to make care truly patient- and family-centered for everyone who depends on them.
