The staff are described as loving and caring. The family thanks Americare staff for all they did for the aunt. Americare is missed by the family. The care given to the aunt is appreciated.
The facility's physical building is antiquated. The rooms are small, congested, and not ADA compliant. For residents in their 60s to 90s who enjoy socializing or nightlife, this is not the right place. Daily snacks are limited to graham crackers and water. There is no daily structure of uplifting activities to boost morale. The staff are underpaid and underappreciated. There are no resident council meetings with staff and management. Updated technology is not part of the staff's vocabulary. It seems to operate by Steve and Eleanor's way, rather than resident needs. Paying residents are not treated as paying residents. Residents' financial contributions are what keep the business running, yet they are not adequately acknowledged. Cognitively capable residents who voice concerns are bullied or controlled. There was at least one month when rent was $40 behind, yet the treatment received suggested otherwise.I miss you Americare. A very loving and caring staff. Thank you for all you did for my beautiful aunt. Those opening lines carry a lot of heart and memory, painting a picture of the care and warmth that once defined the experience for a family member who mattered deeply.
From September 15, 2023 to December 20, 2024, I was a paying resident at America's Edge. I can attest to a building and physical environment that felt antiquated, with rooms that were small and overly congested. The space itself didn't feel welcoming to someone who needed a bit more breathing room or easier access, and the place clearly wasn't ADA compliant. Those realities mattered every day, especially for someone navigating aging with physical and cognitive challenges. It wasn't just about comfort; it was about safety, independence, and dignity in space.
For anyone who is physically and mentally in their 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s - and who still wants to go out, socialize, and enjoy life - this is not the place I would recommend for a mother, father, aunt, or uncle. The description here reflects a lived reality: daytime social opportunities and nightlife that many residents crave were simply not present. The atmosphere did not accommodate the kind of vibrant activity and community engagement that helps people stay connected and energized. When you're paying for care and a living environment, you expect a certain level of encouragement to participate in life outside your room; that wasn't consistently offered.
Daily life felt lacking in basic morale boosters. Snacks consisted of graham crackers and water, and there was no robust daily structure of uplifting activities. Without a consistent schedule of meaningful engagement, residents can feel isolated or forgotten, and that is a real cost to well-being. Morale was not given the attention or programming needed to lift spirits and foster a sense of community among people who are living out some of their most vulnerable years.
There were ongoing concerns about the staffing situation as well. The staff, I perceived, were underpaid and underappreciated, which can ripple into the level of care and attention residents receive. There was also a glaring absence of resident council meetings that would provide a structured forum for residents to voice concerns and collaborate with management. The stereotype that technology and modernization were simply not a priority felt pervasive, a sentiment summed up by the phrase "Steve and Eleanor's way," signaling a management style that many residents and families perceived as rigid and unilateral rather than collaborative. It was a reminder of how critical leadership and culture are in a place that people call home.
Despite being a paying resident, I felt I wasn't treated as such. The business would not be sustainable without the input and payments of residents, yet the relationship sometimes felt transactional rather than respectful. If you could articulate your wants, concerns, and complaints - if you could vocalize them - you could be met with bullying or control attempts. They tried this with me during the year and three months I lived there, but I stood firm. That dynamic created a troubling dichotomy: the very people paying to reside there were being pushed into the background or into a defensive posture rather than being treated as partners in care.
Over the course of my stay, I paid rent every month with one exception - one month where I was behind by a mere $40. The reaction to that small delay was disproportionate, as if I owed the entire month's rent or more, rather than a simple temporary misalignment that could be resolved. It was a telling moment about the tone of administration and the way finances and residency were intertwined in a way that felt punitive rather than supportive. After a year and three months, the impression is not just about facilities or snacks; it's about the entire environment that shaped how residents were treated, valued, and spoken to on a daily basis.
I'm writing this from a place of living my truth, acknowledging both the care that existed and the barriers that overshadowed it. The memory of a delicate balance - where compassionate staff could be found and moments of genuine kindness happened - persisting alongside concerns about space, activity, respect, and resident voice - paints a complex portrait. The experience was not one-dimensional; it carried both gratitude and disappointment, a reminder of how important it is for elder care facilities to harmonize warmth with modern expectations, safety with dignity, and resident input with leadership decisions. It's a story that matters to anyone considering a similar path, and it invites a broader conversation about how to preserve what's good while addressing the gaps that can dim the everyday lives of residents and their families.
