    Review

When it comes to selecting a suitable long-term care facility for a loved one, the decision can be overwhelming and emotional. Our family faced this challenge recently when considering Grace, a place recommended by a family member who claimed it had an excellent reputation and high rankings. With that endorsement in mind, we decided to visit the facility, hoping to gain firsthand insight into what they offered.

Unfortunately, our visit coincided with an unfortunate circumstance—the facility was under quarantine due to a scabies outbreak. Although we understood that such health issues can arise in any setting, whether prestigious or modestly maintained, the quarantine left us unable to see the living quarters or interact with residents. Instead, we were restricted to only visiting the administrative office. This limited interaction significantly hampered our ability to gauge the atmosphere of Grace and assess its suitability for our mother.

During our brief stay at the facility's office, we learned about some of their practices and policies which raised several red flags for us. A significant concern was that Grace does not provide televisions for their residents. While some may argue that television is not essential, it is important to note that our mother enjoys watching her favorite shows as part of her daily routine. The absence of a TV could lead her to feel isolated or deprived of entertainment which she cherishes.

Additionally, we discovered that there are strict limitations placed on other forms of entertainment at Grace. Music is an essential part of life for many individuals—including our mother—who finds joy in listening to songs from various genres. The restrictions on both music and television made us question whether this environment would support her interests and well-being in any meaningful way.

While we acknowledge that outbreaks like scabies can impact any facility regardless of cleanliness or aesthetic appeal, the overall experience left us feeling uneasy about Grace as a potential care home for our mother. A healthcare environment should convey feelings of warmth and inclusion rather than exclusion—an aspect that appeared lacking during our visit amid the quarantine situation.

Ultimately, although recommendations from loved ones are invaluable considerations when making healthcare choices, personal experiences and observations prove equally critical. Based on what we gathered during our limited time at Grace and understanding our mother's preferences and needs, we've concluded that this facility would not align with what we're looking for in terms of care and comfort for her future living situation. Seeking a place where she can enjoy music and television freely remains paramount as we continue searching for alternatives that better suit her lifestyle preferences while ensuring her health needs are met effectively.
