I spent a month at Mount Carmel, and the experience left a lasting sting. The stay was overshadowed by constant hunger, with meals that felt far too small to meet my needs. Each day I hoped for enough food to sustain me, but the portions left me feeling weak and frustrated, as though my basic nourishment was not being taken seriously. The sense of neglect around something as fundamental as eating made the days feel longer and more taxing than they already were.
Food alone would have been hard enough, but the situation was compounded by the sense that my needs weren't being fully understood or met. I am deaf, and I rely on clear communication to navigate daily life, understand what's happening around me, and participate in my own care. The difficulty of getting adequate nourishment was tied to broader concerns about how my needs were being communicated and prioritized within the facility. When hunger is met with indifference or delayed attention, every day starts with a struggle to get basic dignity back.
Communication barriers played a central role in my experience. I needed an interpreter to participate effectively in physical therapy and occupational therapy, and to fully engage in the signs and finger-spelling I was trying to teach and practice. Without reliable interpreter support, I couldn't access the therapies as I should have, and finger-spelling and sign language became even more of a challenge rather than a bridge to understanding and progress. The gap between what I required and what was provided made every therapy session feel incomplete and frustrating.
There was a particularly alarming incident that I cannot overlook. I describe a CNA who I felt was immature and who is Black as having hit my face while I was attempting to teach fingerspelling and sign language. This moment left me shaken and afraid for my safety. It wasn't just about a physical blow; it was about how quickly trust erodes when a staff member you depend on for care treats you with violence or roughness during an attempt to communicate. I left that encounter feeling vulnerable and deeply unsettled about the environment in which I was supposed to receive care and support.
In truth, the entire experience contributed to a strong sense of aversion toward the nursing home. I grew to hate the place, not because of a single incident alone, but because of a pattern of issues: meals that left me hungry, insufficient accommodations for my deafness, and a troubling interaction with staff that felt unsafe. The combination of practical shortcomings and emotional distress created a persistent feeling that my well-being was not being adequately protected or prioritized. It's hard to feel valued in a setting where basic needs aren't reliably met and where communication breaks down so easily.
What I want moving forward is a system that treats residents with the dignity and attention they deserve. That means consistent, accessible interpreter support for all therapies and activities, meals that meet caloric and nutritional needs, and a culture of staff training that emphasizes respectful handling of residents who communicate in nonverbal ways. It also means accountability for any staff behavior that endangers residents or undermines their sense of safety. If Mount Carmel can address these core issues - food adequacy, effective communication accommodations, and respectful, nonviolent treatment - the care experience could be transformed from one of distress to one that supports recovery and dignity. Until then, the impression remains that this facility needs substantial changes to truly serve its residents.

How and When Medicaid May Cover Assisted Living Costs
Medicaid coverage for assisted living varies by state and is primarily available to low-income individuals, with eligibility dependent on strict income and asset limits. Some states offer HCBS waivers for specific services in assisted living, but families must generally cover room and board costs, and should verify facility acceptance of Medicaid while considering potential waiting lists.

Medicaid waivers for assisted living services provide vital support for seniors and individuals with disabilities in need of long-term care, with varying state-specific eligibility criteria and benefits. These waivers cover personal care and case management but often do not fully cover room and board, leading to waiting lists for many applicants.
