Over the last month, I hired a weekend caregiver service with the hope of finding reliable help to look after my grandmother. The goal was simple: someone who would show up on Saturdays and Sundays, provide attentive care, and keep lines of communication open so we could plan ahead. Unfortunately, the experience turned into a pattern of delays, miscommunications, and care that fell short of what we expected or needed.
From the very first weekend, the service failed to meet basic expectations. The first aid provider arrived late, which already set a frustrating tone for the day. More troubling were several behavior issues: the caregiver needed assistance to help my grandmother with basic tasks, which should have been a straightforward, respectful process. Instead, the caregiver stared at my grandmother and made her uncomfortable, and there was an embarrassing moment where she talked aloud about my grandmother's bowel movements in front of our family, who were in the house and within earshot. Those moments left my grandmother feeling humiliated and created an awkward atmosphere for everyone nearby.
When I requested a replacement caregiver after those early concerns, the owner of the company immediately jumped to the conclusion that we no longer wanted the service. She didn't arrange for anyone to come the following Saturday, and it wasn't until I contacted her to clarify that she finally acknowledged someone would be available on Sunday. Even after the clarification, I assumed we would be in good shape going forward, but the next weekend rolled around and no one showed up again.
On inquiry, the owner offered an excuse: the person she thought would be available had a different schedule and wasn't actually free. She did not reach out to inform us in advance; I had to call her to get any explanation. She apologized and said no one would be coming that weekend, which was disheartening and left us without coverage again. This pattern - of missed shifts and a lack of proactive communication - continued to erode our trust.
We decided to give the service another chance, and I tried to coordinate ahead of time by touching base on a Thursday about upcoming weekends. The owner did not respond until Friday, and even then the answer was incomplete. She said she was checking the schedule and waiting to hear back from one person. She then mentioned that the person might not be available due to COVID exposures and the protocols that followed. In the end, she said she hadn't heard back from that person, so she didn't think anyone would be available, and she left it at that. Once again, there was no one coming that weekend, extending a second consecutive weekend without care.
Buoyed by a hope for improvement, I gave it another shot and arranged to confirm the upcoming weekends again. I touched base on a Thursday about coverage, and the response you eventually get is a Friday message saying the person is still being checked with. The owner again cited the same issue - a potential lack of availability from staff due to COVID protocols - and admitted she hadn't heard back from the one person who might be able to come. Once more, there was no caregiver, and no proactive outreach from her side to explain what was happening or to offer alternatives.
The recurring theme throughout these weeks was a concerning combination of unreliability and poor communication. The care we did receive was marred by discomfort and embarrassment for my grandmother, and the service repeatedly failed to provide any predictable or dependable coverage on the weekends we had planned around. The owner frequently left us in limbo - our calls went unanswered or were only met with delayed, unclear explanations about scheduling - and there was no proactive effort to secure backup options or to inform us of unavoidable changes ahead of time. This pattern forced us to chase after answers rather than receive timely updates, which defeated the purpose of hiring a dependable weekend caregiver.
Given the repeated misses, the inconsistent communication, and the uncomfortable situations my grandmother endured, I cannot recommend this service to anyone who needs reliable weekend support. The experience underscored the importance of timely arrivals, respectful and private care, and clear, proactive communication - standards that were not met in our case. If you choose to engage with this company, proceed with extreme caution: confirm a solid backup plan, insist on timely updates, and ensure staf?ing makes sense for your schedule long in advance to avoid gaps in care and to protect your loved ones' dignity.
