A Troubling Experience at Clermont Health & Rehabilitation: A Daughter's Account

When families find themselves in a position where loved ones require rehabilitation services, they often seek facilities that promise care, compassion, and a nurturing environment. Unfortunately, this was not the experience my family and I encountered at Clermont Health & Rehabilitation. Following a brief stay in a step-down unit at South Lake Hospital, my father was transferred to this facility with the hope that he would receive appropriate care. However, what transpired over the next few days left us distraught and utterly disillusioned.

My father's transfer to Clermont took place on Thursday night. Shortly after his admission, my husband and I went to visit him on Friday morning—eager to check on his well-being and ensure he was settling in comfortably. Upon entering his room, we were met with an alarming scene: my father was screaming incoherently about being scammed and cheated. This distressing behavior seemed entirely out of character for him. It became immediately apparent that something had gone terribly wrong since his arrival.

As we began to piece together the situation from our father’s frantic declarations and some initial conversations with staff members, it became evident that he had experienced significant neglect during the early hours after his admission. According to him, he pressed the call button for assistance around 2 AM; however, no one came to attend to him for an extended period. By the time morning arrived, he had soiled himself due to lack of attention—a deeply humiliating experience that left him feeling both physically uncomfortable and emotionally distressed.

Despite this appalling treatment, it appeared that Clermont Health & Rehabilitation struggled tremendously with staffing issues or mere neglectful practices since only one staff member had attended to my father during a span of 12.5 hours before our visit. This inadequacy raised serious concerns about their capability to provide essential care for vulnerable patients who may be relying on them for basic needs during their recovery process.

When I approached the staff later that day around 8:30 AM with a request for an immediate transfer—one driven by concern for my father's treatment—the response was disappointingly slow. The process dragged on until 5 PM without any clear communication regarding why such delays persisted or when action would finally be taken. Moreover, when it came time to arrange transportation for my father’s transfer back to another facility better suited to meet his needs, Clermont refused to call an ambulance despite our urgent requests.

Frustrated by their lack of action and feeling compelled as advocates for my father’s health and safety, I ultimately signed an Against Medical Advice (AMA) document in order to discharge him myself. This decision meant driving him personally to the emergency room rather than waiting indefinitely at a facility where we felt he was receiving inadequate attention and care—what should have been a straightforward rehabilitation experience turned into a distressing battle against institutional negligence.

In conclusion, our unfortunate experience at Clermont Health & Rehabilitation serves as a cautionary tale of what can happen when patient care is compromised due either to systemic issues or fundamental negligence within healthcare facilities. Families trust these institutions during vulnerable times in their lives but are left shattered when caregivers fail them in such critical ways. It is imperative for individuals seeking rehabilitation services in Clermont—or anywhere else—to carefully consider options beyond this facility if they wish for their loved ones’ voices and needs truly mattering through what can often be an overwhelming journey towards recovery.

Based on our harrowing ordeal fraught with chaos instead of compassion at Clermont Health & Rehabilitation—and having witnessed firsthand how easily things can go wrong—I cannot recommend this facility under any circumstances. Families deserve better; they deserve providers committed wholeheartedly not just towards profits but also towards fostering dignified care environments where patients feel valued as individuals deserving respect throughout their healing journey.
