Review
When the time came to find an assisted living arrangement for their mom, the family had heard positive things about 214 Martin long before. They compared it to the only other facility in Uvalde and found that 214 Martin was the clear winner. With a maximum occupancy of 16 residents, this facility used to be the city hospital and has since been extensively remodeled. The staff is known for being friendly and caring, providing care levels that rival those of a full-blown nursing home. While Mom brings her own furniture and bedding, they take care of all housekeeping and laundry tasks. Meals are provided, which Mom claims are far superior to hospital and rehab food. In addition, they even offer a small fridge and microwave if she wants some independence. Plus, with just an hour's notice, they can facilitate Skype video calls with Mom.
Upon Mom's move-in, the facility implemented strict quarantine protocols due to COVID-19. This means that communication with Mom can only happen through her cell phone or prearranged video calls. Activities are limited, but they do organize community BINGO sessions where each resident can sit outside their suite while staff calls out numbers. While residents have some freedom within their suites, close social interaction is discouraged until the crisis is under control as mandated by the State of Texas.
The second facility visited by two brothers left a positive impression on them. Located less than a mile from Mom's house, these facilities were nearly identical to one another in Uvalde despite being housed in an older building that used to serve as the local hospital. However, it has been thoroughly renovated since then. Although it has a smaller capacity than its competitor, this facility had two openings at the time of visitation. Meeting with their administrator sparked very positive feelings about them overall. One potential concern could be around Mom's ability to transfer from her bed to a wheelchair during emergencies as she has not yet demonstrated this skill during her rehab. However, it's unclear whether her therapists have focused on that aspect yet. Additionally, this facility offers a flat rate without any additional service fees.
Some visitors also provided their firsthand experiences with the facilities. One person mentioned being a hairstylist who visits on Mondays and expressed their love for everyone there. They described the place as pleasant with a friendly staff. Another visitor volunteered to play dominos and had a great time, highlighting the kind staff members and delicious food they had during lunch. They were particularly impressed by the home-like feeling exuded by every room, as each one is decorated by the residents themselves. Some rooms even featured extras like computers and Facebook access.
While these reviews offer glimpses into the positive aspects of both 214 Martin and the second facility visited in Uvalde, it's important to consider various perspectives when making a decision about assisted living arrangements for loved ones.
