    Review

A dear friend sits at Pisgah Villas, and the more I learn about her daily life there, the more troubling the picture becomes. I've lived in the Candler area for decades, and Pisgah Valley - back when it was under Seventh Day Adventist ownership - was once looked upon with trust and a sense of community. Today, though, I'm left with a very different impression. My own experience and the accounts I hear from others around town paint a portrait of a facility where residents who cannot prepare their own meals are not receiving meals that meet basic nutrition or dignity, and where care can feel uneven at best.

A central concern across the stories is the quality of food. The dining program is described as "Distinctive Dining," yet what reaches the tables seems to be dominated by processed items. For residents who rely on the kitchen for their daily meals, this translates into options that don't align with their nutritional needs. One Saturday night in particular featured hot dogs and chips as a dinner, a choice that even my husband found hard to understand for people who may be sustaining themselves on limited or no other options. In at least a couple of cases, I've heard that two of roughly 23 to 24 residents have lost weight because they simply can't eat what is being served. The reality is that some residents end up supplementing with Boost every day, paying for it out of their own pockets after the cost of meals they can't eat. It's hard to reconcile the care these individuals deserve with a menu that seems to prioritize convenience over nutrition.

The issue extends beyond Pisgah Villas to Pisgah Manor, where a friend in her early 60s spent about seven weeks in rehab earlier this year. She encountered the same food problems that the Villas residents experience. What stands out here is not only the recurring dietary concerns but also the broader quality of care. Her friends and family, including myself, took turns bringing meals throughout her stay to try to ensure she received something more nutritious and manageable. The care problems during that visit were severe: she was largely bed-bound and repeatedly had to ring for assistance to use the bedpan, often waiting more than an hour for help. There was even one verified incident of CNA abuse. This combination of limited nourishment and delayed basic care paints a troubling image of daily life for a vulnerable population.

My involvement with these concerns goes beyond mere observation. As someone who lives nearby and works as an accountant, I'm frequently asked for referrals and recommendations. I had recommended Pisgah Valley to a friend earlier in the year, based on its reputation at the time and my own experience in the community. That trust has been shaken. It's disheartening to realize that the facility that once seemed well-regarded now prompts hesitation and questions from those I trust and respect. The weight of these experiences makes me reconsider how I advise others about where to seek care for a loved one.

Of course, there are counterpoints within the same broad community. I know a family member who was a patient at the facility and received excellent care. The nurses and CNAs were thorough, and she felt comfortable throughout her stay. A friend who has experience with the facility recommended it, underscoring that there can be meaningful differences from one experience to another. This variation suggests that staffing, individual caregivers, and perhaps the specific unit or shift can dramatically alter the quality of care a resident receives. It isn't a uniform failure story; rather, it reflects inconsistency that can leave families uncertain about what to expect.

Ultimately, I'm left with a mixed sense of disappointment and urgency. The nutritional needs of residents who cannot feed themselves deserve more than processed meals and infrequent, slow responses to basic needs. The troubling episodes of delayed assistance, coupled with reports of abuse, demand attention from facility leadership, staff, and oversight bodies. My aim isn't to condemn every worker or every moment of care, but to call for stronger accountability, higher standards for nutrition and dignity, and a commitment to timely, compassionate assistance for those who rely on others for their most fundamental needs. Until improvements are evident, I will continue to weigh what I hear from the community against my own experiences and those of the people I care about, recognizing that some residents still receive excellent care while others struggle with systemic gaps.
