Review

From the moment her family first walked through the doors, it was clear that the heart of the Plaza at Moanalua lies in its people. Our mother is a resident there, and we are deeply grateful to the entire team led by Heddy Cortes, the Director of Nursing, along with Keisha, Stephanie, Kathy, Janna, Phanh, John, and the broader care support crew. We also want to acknowledge the managers - Sandra, Jeff, Courtney, and Jennifer - whose kindness, patience, and accommodation have made every interaction a positive one. It isn't just a beautiful setting that sets the Plaza apart; it's the people who work there, who treat each resident as an individual and go above and beyond to make life comfortable, safe, and genuinely joyful.

As of August 2023, we marked a one-year anniversary that reflected both continuity and growth. COVID-19 prevention remains well-handled, but the environment has opened up in helpful ways. The Plaza has expanded its social life to give residents more opportunities to connect, learn, and enjoy themselves. Off-site escorted visits to affordable restaurants and other enjoyable places - such as the zoo - have become part of the routine, allowing Mom to experience the island's offerings while staying in a secure, supported setting. In short, Plaza at Moanalua continues to be a wonderful place to live, with a liveliness that complements its already strong sense of community.

Looking back at the initial two-month review from 2022, the consistency of warmth and quality shines through. The staff treats every resident as an individual within a warm, safe, and fun neighborhood. A touching example is how the nursing team anticipates needs: even though Mom is independent but anxious about blood pressure monitors, the staff quietly measures her blood pressure in the evening inside her own apartment using a device she finds more comfortable, without her having to ask. This level of proactive care made a real difference in her daily routine. The maintenance and housekeeping teams are also quick to respond - whether someone needs help with an apartment call button, or the concierge desk, or an urgent tech fix. When Spectrum TV faltered, a quick button press brought help right away to reset it. A housekeeper's thoughtful gesture - carrying items up in a cart and using the service elevator - showed how well staff watch out for residents and families alike. And when residents expressed a hobby - sewing, in this case - the Plaza promptly provided a large sewing table in the common area to support that interest.

The dining experience at the Plaza is another standout element. The food is consistently praised, with a chef, kitchen staff, and dining room team that cater to a broad range of tastes. Meals have become healthier and more enjoyable, and Mom's overall dining experience reflects thoughtful preparation and attention to quality. The sense of home extends into the living areas, where the building and surrounding grounds feel charming and inviting. A small park adjacent to the building provides shady seating and a peaceful spot for quiet time or a gentle stroll along the private path. Even for a resident who isn't an avid walker, there are plenty of moments to enjoy - watching birds in the morning or taking a short stroll with the Plaza's own pathways.

Activities and services add richness to everyday life. Mom has appreciated the crafts sessions, musical performances, and the salon services - pedicures in particular - which contribute to a sense of well-being and belonging. The Plaza's central location makes the shuttle a practical asset, enabling trips across the island for both practical needs and leisure. The care team's flexibility was especially evident when Mom faced a dental emergency: the concierge, shuttle driver, and others coordinated to arrange a visit that allowed the reviewer to meet her at the dentist. And the regular presence of the Clinical Lab truck every Friday spares Mom the trouble and wait of traveling to a distant lab, a small but meaningful convenience that underscores the community's patient-centered approach.

A key part of the Plaza experience is value. The monthly cost is all-inclusive in the sense that it covers meals, air conditioning and other utilities, transportation, and 24-hour care that supports even those who are most independent. For families, this offers peace of mind: the ability to travel and visit Mom without worry, knowing she's in a safe, well-supported environment that still respects her independence. After weighing other options, it was clear to us that the Plaza at Moanalua provides excellent value now and as her needs evolve.

In sum, our experience at the Plaza at Moanalua feels like a careful blend of beauty, practicality, and genuine care. The setting is appealing, but it's the people who truly distinguish this community - the compassionate nursing team, attentive support staff, and thoughtful managers who make every day easier and richer for residents and their families. The gratitude we feel is deep: mahalo nui loa to the entire team for their kindness, patience, and dedication. For families weighing senior living options, the Plaza stands out as a place where comfort, connection, and care come together in a meaningful and enduring way.
