Review

In early May, a person visited an Assisted Living Facility (ALF) and met with the Director/owner Diane Anderson to discuss placing their mother in the facility. The facility appeared smaller and more intimate compared to larger ones, which was appealing. During the visit, it was mentioned that the mother was quite independent, being able to dress herself, bathe unassisted, and use her walker to move around. However, Diane suggested asking the doctor for a sleep aid for nighttime.

The mother was moved into the facility on May 16th, but within a week, the person received a call from Diane stating that the mother was refusing to get up at night and wetting the bed. As a result, the rate would increase by $300 or she would need to be removed within 45 days. The person agreed to the increase temporarily. However, upon returning from vacation on June 23rd, they received an email from Diane stating that the mother had fallen during the night and had been sent to the hospital as a precaution.

When contacting the hospital, no tests or lab work had been done yet. They were told to call back later for more information. When they did call back at 6 PM as instructed, they found out that their mother had already been sent back to the facility and was deemed fine. Upon visiting their mother at the ALF, they noticed she had no recollection of how or why she fell but had visible injuries on her head and arm.

Weeks later, bills started arriving for ambulance trips and hospital expenses that were not anticipated. The person expressed frustration at not receiving any phone call regarding their mother's fall; otherwise, they would have addressed it immediately themselves. Seeking answers about what happened during their visit on August 20th, Diane refused to come in and spoke over the phone about an unpaid bill for cranberry capsules.

A subsequent visit took place on August 21st to confront Diane about the fall and inquire about the facility's procedures. It was mentioned that Diane claimed to be available 24 hours a day but was not immediately informed of their mother's fall until a bump on her head was noticed. Despite efforts to seek clarification, Diane became irate, screaming at the visitors, and even insulted them personally. She then demanded that the mother be removed from the facility that day.

Additional incidents were recounted, such as Diane wanting physical therapy for the mother because she believed she needed a walker. However, it was revealed that Medicare did not cover it under the mother's plan. The person also noticed during visits that most residents were in the family room watching TV while their mother was asleep in a chair with slippers on instead of her tennis shoes.

Furthermore, there was an incident where someone called the doctor requesting additional medication for the mother, which he declined without informing who made the request or for what reason. Additionally, over-the-counter cranberry capsules were given to the mother without clearance from either her family or doctor, raising concerns about following proper procedures.

Ultimately, due to dissatisfaction with how various situations were handled and Diane's outburst during their visit, they opted to remove their mother from the facility by August 29th.
