Review of Good Hands Senior Care: A Cautionary Tale

When it comes to caring for our elderly loved ones, the stakes are undeniably high. Families seek out places that promise safety, comfort, and health care tailored to their specific needs. Unfortunately, my experience with Good Hands Senior Care in October 2018 was a stark reminder that not all care facilities live up to these promises. After just four days of placing my father there, I quickly decided to remove him due to the alarming neglect and substandard conditions I observed.

Initially, the owner of Good Hands appeared friendly and accommodating; however, it soon became apparent that his primary concern was profit rather than genuine care for the residents. This disconnect between appearance and reality began to surface when I witnessed the quality of care provided by the caregiver he had hired. This particular individual was not only unqualified but also struggled with basic communication skills. He had limited proficiency in English and demonstrated little understanding of my father's medical history, despite having received detailed documentation upon admission. In one particularly concerning instance, he fed my diabetic father sugary items such as orange juice and cookies, completely disregarding his dietary restrictions.

To make matters worse, during the time my father stayed at Good Hands Senior Care, we endured an unusually hot climate where indoor temperatures soared between 80-82 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite these uncomfortable conditions, the owner refrained from turning on the air conditioning—citing instructions from someone unnamed—leaving us with no choice but to endure stagnant heat. To improve airflow without installing a screen door—a request previously made by other residents—the front door was left wide open instead. This led to an unwelcome influx of large horseflies buzzing around both the bedrooms and kitchen during mealtimes—a clear sign of poor hygiene practices.

This lack of cleanliness extended beyond insect issues; it was evident in my father's bedroom as well. Upon arrival at Good Hands Senior Care, I found his room dusty and unkempt, with aged furniture bearing filthy drawers filled with dust and debris. The presence of dead horseflies on both the bed and windowsills served as further evidence that proper cleaning protocols were sorely lacking in this facility. Additionally, despite remaining attentive throughout my visits each day—hoping for signs of improvement—I only witnessed a decline in my father's condition during his short stay there.

As days passed under such inadequate care conditions, I noted troubling changes in my father's physical appearance: he became disheveled looking with swollen legs and dry cracked lips—a striking contrast to how he had appeared prior to moving into Good Hands Senior Care. These visible signs were distressing enough for me to take swift action; after only four days plagued by neglectful care practices that compromised his well-being and dignity, I decided enough was enough.

Once removed from this unsatisfactory situation, I placed my father in another board & care facility located in Irvine—and for just $500 more per month than what we paid at Good Hands—we finally found what we had been searching for: a safe environment where dedicated caregivers possessed formal medical training tended effectively to residents' needs. With ample compassion shown through personalized attention regarding food choices and overall living conditions—from cleanliness to comfort—this new facility offered a stark contrast reminiscent of what I had once hoped for at Good Hands.

Ultimately, if you are searching for reliable senior care options for your loved ones—know that the experience we endured at Good Hands served as a cautionary tale about inadequately staffed facilities motivated by profit rather than genuine concern for resident welfare! It is crucial always to conduct thorough research before making life-changing decisions regarding eldercare placement; sometimes appearances can be deceiving!
