Review
The experience of visiting my family member living in a large facility near the A-train line has been far from pleasant. Each time I arrive, I am struck by the overwhelming stench of cigarette smoke that permeates not just her room but the entire environment. This discomfort is compounded by the state of cleanliness—or, more accurately, the lack thereof. The hallways upstairs are filthy, littered with cigarette butts and debris that create an uninviting atmosphere. As someone who cares deeply for my family member's well-being, it is disheartening to witness such neglect in a place where one should feel safe and comfortable.
Upon entering my family member's bedroom, I was disturbed to find seven cigarette butts scattered across the floor. It was evident that these were not left behind by my family member; she has never smoked. Instead, they are remnants of her roommate's disregard for shared space and common courtesy. Seeing these remnants of smoking in her personal space raises significant concerns regarding the roommate's behavior as well as the overall management of the living situation. My relative has no interest in smoking, yet she is forced into an environment where such habits invade her personal life.
The ramifications of this smoke-filled environment extend beyond aesthetics—my family member’s clothing absorbs this unwanted odor each time I collect her. It's distressing to see how profoundly tobacco use impacts not only smokers but also those around them who may wish to distance themselves from it. When we drive home together after visits, I can’t help but notice how my car too becomes tainted with smoke—the scent clings like a stubborn shadow, following us wherever we go post-visit. This situation is neither fair nor respectful toward individuals who lead healthy lifestyles.
Moreover, during one visit to the dining area, I observed something that truly horrified me: staff members cleaning tables while using dirty gloves without washing their hands or changing their gear between handling food and other surfaces. It was quite disgusting and raised serious eyebrows regarding hygiene practices within the facility. Food safety should be a priority in any communal living situation, especially considering vulnerable populations like seniors often reside there.
This lack of hygiene care exacerbates my concerns about overall cleanliness throughout the establishment. If staff members are willing to compromise on basic sanitary protocols while handling residents' food—a cornerstone of health and wellness—what else might they be neglecting? Many residents rely on these meals for adequate nutrition; thus, it becomes critical that all aspects surrounding food service adhere strictly to health guidelines to prevent illness or further discomfort.
In summary, my experiences visiting my family member raise alarm bells about both environmental quality and management standards within this facility near the A-train line. The overwhelming presence of cigarette smoke creates an inhospitable atmosphere not only for smokers’ roommates but also for visitors like myself who must contend with lingering odors long after leaving. Coupled with unsatisfactory cleaning practices demonstrated by staff—especially concerning food handling—these factors significantly diminish what ought to be a safe and nurturing living space for all residents involved. My hope is that issues like these will bring awareness towards improving conditions so that families can enjoy their time together without encountering such distressing situations in communal settings.

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are fundamental tasks vital for an individual's independence, particularly in older adults over 85, and include functions like bathing and dressing; assessing ADLs alongside Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) helps determine the level of required assistance due to age-related health challenges. Tailored support plans, involving family and community resources, are essential for maintaining dignity and autonomy in assisted living environments.
Medicare does not cover assisted living costs, as it focuses on acute medical needs and short-term care, with exceptions for certain medically necessary services like physical therapy. Individuals must explore other options such as Medicaid, veterans' benefits, or long-term care insurance to manage these expenses effectively.
Choosing between assisted living and nursing homes involves evaluating emotional and financial factors, with assisted living offering independence and support for daily activities at a lower cost, while nursing homes provide intensive medical care for individuals with significant health needs. The decision is influenced by personal preferences, health status, cognitive function, and varying Medicaid coverage across states.
