For instance, my mother received various forms of therapy—physical therapy, occupational therapy (OT), and speech therapy—during her stay at Temple View. Each therapist demonstrated professionalism, kindness, and dedication to her recovery process. Their positive interactions provided some relief amidst an otherwise distressing situation. Yet as we navigated through the healthcare system seeking appropriate support for my mom’s condition, we were struck by how essential good communication is within such institutions. Unfortunately, this seemed to be lacking at Temple View.

Over the weekend, home health professionals assessed my mother’s declining health and recommended hospice care based on their findings. This transition was crucial yet particularly difficult given her circumstances; our family was urged to visit the hospice office ourselves to formalize arrangements for her new pain management plan involving a fentanyl patch. It was meant to alleviate her suffering during transport—a consideration that highlights both urgency and compassion in end-of-life care decisions.

However, our attempt to secure timely assistance from Temple View during this critical period fell short. Upon arriving at the facility to take my mother home, we found ourselves without any help preparing her for departure. Unfortunately, none of her belongings were ready for us either; it felt like a stark absence of support during an emotionally charged moment. When I approached staff members for help with dressing my mom amid colder weather conditions, they informed me that they needed time for a staff meeting first—an excuse that only added frustration in a time where empathy should have prevailed.

After expressing our concerns and waiting in the hall with two other individuals involved with her transfer process—as well as trying to maintain composure amidst growing unease—a younger aide eventually came down to assist us. This individual proved herself helpful; she exhibited kindness while helping dress my mother as we prepped for transition out of Temple View Transitional Care Center. Though there was some glimmer of warmth encountered through her efforts that day, it underscores an inconsistency in service delivery within this organization.

Once transported safely to the new facility with hospice care now initiated under great duress due to pain management needs not being met adequately before leaving Temple View—the issues persisted concerning medication administration as well. That night upon arrival at hospice care became even more troubling when it was revealed that someone from the transitional center had interfered with plans regarding attaching the fentanyl patch necessary for managing my mother's pain effectively. Such denial felt unjustifiable especially given how urgent these adjustments were needed considering her deteriorating state leading up until now—it illuminated significant flaws within communication protocols or decision-making processes occurring behind closed doors at Temple View.
