Review

In August 2024 we placed our beloved mother at Rocky Mountain Assisted Living (RMAL) on Virginia Avenue in Lakewood. She was initially resistant to the idea of being "dumped" into assisted living, but the care she needed far surpassed what we could provide at home. RMAL turned out to be an outstanding solution for a dilemma that many families face, and it proved to be a wonderful fit for her and for our family.

The facility itself feels more like a residential home than a clinical setting. It's a small, intimate place with ten spacious apartments, centered around a large, welcoming great room, a dining room, and a kitchen, all opening onto a lovely covered porch that overlooks a peaceful back yard. The vibe is warm and cozy, with a sense that the space could easily pass for a vacation chalet in a mountain town - comfortable, homelike, and serene. The surrounding neighborhood is described as great and convenient, with a nearby park where residents can enjoy a stroll in their wheelchairs with the support of attentive staff.

The community at RMAL is exceptionally sweet and friendly. Although there are at most ten residents, several have lived there for years and a number are well over a hundred years old. My mother formed lifelong friendships there - currents of companionship and shared moments that she thought she might never experience again after leaving her previous routine. The character of the residents adds to the sense that this is more than just a place to stay; it's a small, caring community where people know one another and genuinely look out for each other.

But the true heart of RMAL is the extraordinary staff. The house manager, Eka Reckling, stands out as a phenomenal caregiver who treats residents as if they were her own family. Eka, along with Anaya and many other wonderful team members, creates an atmosphere where warmth, compassion, and attentiveness are the guiding principles. Eka's gentle, thoughtful care made a deep impression on our family, and she went above and beyond in countless ways. When Eka noticed our mother's decline, she immediately alerted the family, giving us the opportunity to travel from across the country to be with her. Even as our mother grew less responsive, Eka stayed with her to ensure she wasn't alone, a gesture that meant more than words can express.

The praise for RMAL's staff is consistent and heartfelt. Anaya, Fatima, Nirmala, Kat (the nurse who monitors all residents), Sanjuana, and Yanuella are all frequently named for their kindness, attentiveness, and professionalism. The staff anticipate needs, keep things upbeat and intelligent, and foster an environment where the house feels like a home rather than a clinical facility. The staff are described as marvelous, caring, and like family - people you would want looking after your own loved ones. They celebrate life's small moments too, hosting birthday lunches and cultivating a sense of pride in the home, evidenced by the tomato plants in the backyard and the flower garden at the front - little touches that remind residents they are living in a place that feels cared for and alive.

There are powerful personal moments tied to Eka's leadership. Our mother's decline was gradual, but Eka's intervention and presence helped ensure she was never alone during those final times. The gratitude from our family is immeasurable; Eka's care, along with the support of Anaya, Nirmala, and the rest of the team, helped us navigate a very emotional period with grace and dignity. Our mother passed away at age 91, surrounded by a community that loved and supported her, and we remain deeply thankful that RMAL provided a space where she could be cared for with such devotion.

The testimonials from families who have had loved ones spend time at RMAL consistently emphasize the same themes: a small, intimate setting that feels like home, a park-adjacent neighborhood that supports safe, gentle outings, and a staff who treat residents with unparalleled respect and kindness. One reviewer, Kathy Jacobs, notes that the entire team - especially Eka, Anaya, Nirmala, Kat, and Sanjuana - delivers exceptional, personalized care that makes the experience of aging more secure and comfortable for everyone involved. Another family member highlights how the staff's dedication allowed his mother-in-law's husband to spend five months there with remarkable care, describing Eka as amazing and the overall team as endlessly helpful and supportive.

Across these experiences, RMAL on Virginia Avenue consistently emerges as a place where aging with dignity is supported by a dedicated, capable, and caring staff. The setting, the sense of community among residents, and the compassionate approach of the house manager and her team create an environment that feels like a true home rather than a facility. For families seeking a safe, nurturing place for a loved one to age - and for residents who benefit from genuine human connection and attentive care - RMAL stands out as a remarkable option in Lakewood.
