During a recent visit to Park Rest with my husband to spend time with a beloved family member, we were greeted by a stream of positive, reassuring experiences. The entire staff seemed genuinely caring, attentive, and professional, and the care we observed felt consistently solid. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere suggested that our relative was in good hands, and the overall flow of care gave us confidence that their needs were being met with thoughtfulness and respect. It was clear that people on the front lines - nurses, aides, therapists, and support staff - were coordinated and focused on the well-being of residents.
Over the days we spent there, we saw a level of care that impressed us. The interactions we witnessed between caregivers and residents were patient and compassionate, and the routines appeared well organized and calm. The staff's attentiveness extended beyond basic tasks to include thoughtful communication and the kind of dignity-preserving care that families hope for in a setting like this. The impression we left with was that the facility valued each resident as an individual and aimed to uphold a standard of professionalism in every facet of daily life, from comfort and safety to gentle, respectful engagement.
Yet, despite the strong impression of care in the moment, a much harsher and more troubling experience emerged in the days that followed. If I could give negative stars, I would. This nursing home has given my family the run-around after two family members passed recently, and the contrast between the two sides of our experience has been jarring. We are left with serious concerns about handling and accountability that have amplified instead of alleviating our grief.
One of the most alarming allegations is that a social security check was stolen, or at the very least disappeared, during the period surrounding these events. The sense of something being missing or mishandled has been wrenching, and it has cast a pall over the otherwise positive memories of care we witnessed. Alongside this, there was a troubling administrative lapse: they did not list the next of kin at admission, even though someone in that role had to be involved for their admission. As a result, we were not informed about her care in a timely way, and we only learned the details when Hospice reached out to us. That delay in communication added to our distress at a vulnerable and emotional time.
The situation has only grown more difficult after her passing. Now they will not release her bank account information, and they refuse to return calls, sometimes hanging up when we try to reach them. We have been courteous and composed throughout, but the lack of response and cooperation has continued to erode any trust we had. The kindness we encountered earlier in the experience seems to clash with this stubborn resistance to basic transparency and cooperation at a moment when the family needs clarity and closure.
In response to these ongoing concerns, our next steps are forward-looking and resolute. We are considering engaging a lawyer to help navigate the financial and administrative issues that have arisen and to protect the interests of those left behind. We also plan to report the situation to the appropriate oversight body, referred to here as the OIA, in hopes of bringing attention to these troubling inconsistencies and ensuring that proper procedures are followed. It is a painful juxtaposition: the memory of compassionate care in one respect and the reality of unresolved, potentially troubling issues in another.
Ultimately, Park Rest presents a paradox that weighs heavily on those who spend time there with loved ones. The initial experiences conveyed how genuine care and professional dedication can feel palpable and reassuring, creating a strong sense of trust. But the subsequent allegations - if upheld - suggest gaps in administration and accountability that cannot be ignored. The contrast between these two narratives is stark, underscoring how crucial clear communication, diligent record-keeping, and respectful handling of family affairs are in a setting that should always prioritize the dignity and welfare of residents and their families.
