    Review

During a recent visit to Park Rest with my husband to be with a family member, we were treated to a string of excellent experiences. The overall impression was positive and uplifting: the facility seemed well-organized, the atmosphere was calm and respectful, and the care we observed felt genuine and attentive. It was clear that our family member was in a setting that valued comfort and dignity, and we left feeling reassured about the environment in which she was staying.

From the outset, the staff at Park Rest appeared consistently caring, attentive, and professional. We noticed that team members communicated clearly, offered help promptly, and interacted with residents and families in a respectful, compassionate manner. The level of attentiveness and the manner in which care was delivered gave us confidence that the staff were genuinely invested in the well-being of those in their care.

We observed ongoing, substantive care during our time there. The routines we witnessed - regular monitoring, timely responses to requests, and patient interactions that reflected a thoughtful approach to each resident's needs - contributed to a sense that the care plan was being followed with diligence. In short, the operational side of the facility seemed robust, and the day-to-day care appeared to be thoughtfully managed.

However, despite this positive surface, a starkly different experience emerged for us later, after two family members had passed. What followed felt like a troubling run-around that left us frustrated and unsettled. There were serious allegations tied to the handling of personal and financial matters, including a claim that a Social Security check disappeared, seemingly vanishing without a trace. Such concerns struck at the heart of trust and accountability in a setting already dealing with profound loss.

Compounding the distress were administrative oversights that impacted our ability to engage with the process. We were not listed as the next of kin at admission for the person who entered care, even though a next of kin needed to be identified for such a case. We did not receive timely information about the care being provided until Hospice contacted us, which left us feeling out of the loop during a critical period and deprived of timely insight into her status and needs.

After the deaths, the situation reportedly deteriorated further as the facility would not release the deceased's bank account information and repeatedly failed to return our calls, sometimes hanging up on us despite our courteous and patient approach. This pattern of communication - or lack thereof - added to a growing sense of frustration and helplessness at a time when clear information was essential.

Given the gravity of these allegations, our next steps include seeking legal counsel and reporting the matter to the Office of the Inspector General (OIA). We are seeking accountability, transparency, and clear answers about how such matters are handled, especially when loved ones are no longer able to advocate for themselves.

Taken together, these experiences reveal a complex picture: the positive, professional care we observed early on contrasts with the alleged mismanagement and troubling post-death handling described later. The disparity underscores the crucial need for consistent, ethical practices and open, respectful communication with families, particularly during vulnerable times surrounding illness, death, and the posthumous management of a resident's affairs.
