Review

I want to begin by acknowledging that I had written a review that wasn't fully positive, and I believe in sharing honest, up-to-date experiences. Affinity Residential Care has shown me that genuine care for clients and staff can make a significant difference, even when there have been bumps along the way. This is my attempt to capture where things started, how they have evolved, and what I've learned through my ongoing journey with Affinity and my son.

In the early days, my family and I faced real challenges as we worked with Affinity to help my son transition into his own apartment. The plan was for him to move into an apartment in Newport, MN, but the move never materialized. There was a lot of back-and-forth, and in the end the move did not happen. This was distressing because he was transitioning out of a program and needed stable housing to ground him during a critical period. I firmly believe that the root of these difficulties lay in a breakdown of communication between departments, something I suspect was tied to organizational changes within the company. The result was a delay that left us navigating uncertainty during a time when stability was essential.

What shifted things in a meaningful way was my opportunity to sit down with Shawntrice, the Program Manager for the ICS department. Since that meeting, communication has improved dramatically, and Shawntrice has consistently shown respect, openness, and honesty. With her support, my son was able to move into his first apartment with far less resistance and much more ease than before. Additionally, I want to commend Jamarques, a young Black man who was very professional and respectful during the intake process. It was clear that my son connected well with him, which felt important and reassuring to see. These interactions helped restore trust and demonstrated that Affinity could indeed prioritize a smooth, person-centered process.

Beyond the immediate housing transition, I've found Affinity to be one of the smoothest providers I've worked with when placing clients. The facilities are among the cleanest in the metro area, and the team is knowledgeable and responsive to our needs. There is, of course, an extensive waitlist, but I understand why - customers clearly see the value in what Affinity offers, and the services provided are top-notch. The organization places a strong emphasis on person-centered care and inclusivity, and this shows in the way programs are designed and delivered. In the summer, there are countless activities and company gatherings that invite clients to bring their loved ones, which helps families feel connected and involved.

What has further impressed me is Affinity's focus on creating a warm, family-like environment, especially during the holidays when these moments can be particularly challenging for the people they serve. In recent months, Affinity went above and beyond to support clients and their families with a sense of safety and connection. A client of mine described Affinity as "the best provider I've had outside of my family," thanks to the Halloween party, catered Thanksgiving meal, Holiday Brunch, and the staff's assistance with finding toy drives for their children. The dedication of the staff - paired with a clear emphasis on holistic, person-centered, and inclusive care - feels genuine and deeply meaningful. The owner's leadership is something I regard highly, with many observers noting that he is one of the brightest minds in healthcare administration in the Midwest. All of this fuels my belief that Affinity is on a strong path of growth and continued commitment to the people they serve.

I'm hopeful that Affinity will continue to support the individuals who rely on them and maintain the positive changes they've implemented, especially as the company navigates ongoing organizational adjustments. The progress I've witnessed gives me confidence in Affinity's ability to keep improving and to sustain a high level of care. I am grateful for the experiences that have unfolded - both the challenges and the improvements - and I look forward to a continued positive relationship with Affinity as they expand their holistic, person-centered services for Minnesota's most vulnerable populations.

That said, I also want to share a stark, troubling memory from my time with Affinity at their residence on 14th Avenue in Minneapolis. I am a former resident, and my overall stay there was not worth the distress it caused. I entered Affinity with a sense of uncertainty about who these people were, and I ultimately endured a deeply violating incident in which two young men, presenting as male, opened my door with the code and took advantage of my rights. I was emotionally devastated and felt profoundly betrayed. When I addressed the situation with multiple staff, I was told not to speak further and was promised that those individuals would not be on the property again; nonetheless, staff later disregarded the complaint and stopped all services for the remainder of my stay. The experience left me shaken and convinced me not to stay at that particular residence again. I sincerely hope that others do not have to endure what I did, and I urge potential residents to be aware of this history when considering the 14th Avenue location.

In sum, Affinity Residential Care has shown a powerful capacity for care, professional conduct, and genuine concern for their clients. The improvements in communication, the thoughtful and respectful engagement from specific staff members, and the overall commitment to a person-centered approach are real strengths that have positively impacted my family. At the same time, there is a grave reminder from my experience at the 14th Avenue residence that no organization is beyond reproach and that safety, dignity, and a responsive complaint process must be non-negotiable. I remain grateful for the progress that has been made and hopeful that Affinity will continue to grow, learn, and uphold the highest standards of care for all of their clients.
