This experience left me heartbroken and enraged, and I feel compelled to tell the story as clearly as I remember it because no family should have to watch a loved one be treated this way. My father stayed with that place for only one month, and in that short time I witnessed a progression that felt more like neglect and disregard than care. He entered with dignity and needs that deserved prompt, attentive medical evaluation, but what followed was a troubling deterioration that I can't shake from my mind. By the end, he had stage two pressure sores on his backside, a sign that his comfort and skin integrity were not being prioritized.
What gnawed at me the most was the medical management - or rather, the lack of it. I explicitly asked the owner to have my father's urinary tract infection checked. The request was ignored. Instead of addressing a possible UTI with appropriate testing and treatment, he was placed on psychiatric medications to manage behaviors that, to my eyes, looked like classic symptoms of a urinary infection. The result was a person who appeared overly sedated, not the active, alert man I knew. The effect was immediate and disturbing: he stopped walking, stopped feeding himself, and spent long hours sleeping in his wheelchair.
Even more alarming was how he was managed while he was immobilized. I told staff that he was showing signs of distress and discomfort associated with an infection, and my pleas were not heard. Instead of reassessing his medical needs, he was effectively tied to his wheelchair in a way that felt restrictive and unsafe. The care team did not respond to the clear signals that something was physically wrong with him. It's hard to articulate the level of frustration and fear I felt watching a decline that seemed preventable, driven by a more punitive approach to behavior than a compassionate, medical one.
The financial side of this experience was painful as well. We were charged about $6,000 a month for care that, in my view, did not meet basic standards of safety or medical attention. It felt like the value of the care did not match the price tag, especially when precious time and health were potentially being sacrificed in the process. There was a sense that money was prioritized over the essential needs of a person who trusted them with his health and well-being.
Compounding the tragedy was the feeding approach, which I saw as inappropriate for someone who was struggling to swallow. There were attempts to feed residents things like hot dogs and chips when swallowing difficulties were evident. This was not simply a matter of preference; it felt like a disregard for medical signals and basic nutrition, as if their plan was to improvise rather than to protect and nourish. It's difficult to describe how disheartening it was to witness meals treated as an afterthought rather than a critical component of care for someone who needed help with every bite.
In the end, my father's condition worsened, and he passed away as a result of the circumstances I described. The connection between the untreated UTI, the ensuing kidney failure, and the overall decline I witnessed remains a painful and unresolved memory. I know I am not alone in feeling that the care facility I trusted to protect him failed to recognize or respond to identifiable medical needs in a timely, compassionate way. The experience has left me with a lasting sense of loss and a warning to others: there are places that might bill themselves as care facilities, but their actions can tell a very different story.
If there's any message I hope others take away, it's this: do not settle for care that prioritizes routine inattention, sedation over symptom-checking, or punitive management of behaviors over medical evaluation. There are facilities out there that genuinely prioritize the health, safety, and dignity of their residents. I urge anyone seeking care for a loved one to look for a place that demonstrates real responsiveness to medical concerns, open communication with families, appropriate nutrition and feeding support, and a clear commitment to preventing harm. My hope is that sharing this experience helps steer families toward care that truly puts people first and avoids repeating the distress I witnessed.
